PRODUCT DETAILS
Conscious Clay ceramic artwork is a wonderfully unique way to celebrate your loved one. Based in Western Australia, ceramisist Hayley Bangham works with Neriage (pronounced Nair-ee-ah-gee) Japanese pottery technique to create this hand thrown design incorporating your loved ones ashes into the layers of clay. Neriage technique involves layering and stacking various colours and grades of clay by hand and demands a high level of precision and understanding of clay behaviour. This ‘composite’ is then thrown on the potters wheel, resulting in a captivating and unique blend of swirls and spirals. Each piece has several different colours and grades of Australian sourced clay, including fine white porcelin, buff raku trachyte, warm tanned and creamy coloured ironstones, rough dark chocolate stoneware and slithers of fine blue and pink clays created by hand in Hayley’s studio.
The exterior of this piece is burnished (polished) with the smooth side of a river stone while it is still leather hard. This emphasises the natural colours and exposes raw minerals embedded in the clay. The interior is glazed with a traditional Japanese semi-translucent Kuan glaze.
